Note from Rear Commodore Regatta - Safety When Sailing

Lets think safety when sailing at the Squadron!

Every newsletter we are going to target some specific information that will enable yachts at the Squadron to check off the safety requirements that should be met when sailing. With the Parmelia Night Race scheduled for February 2020 (and we hope as many yachts as possible from the Squadron will be involved), this is the time to start checking what you need to do to ensure your yacht has the required safety equipment and standards in place.

The sport of sailing in Australia has a strong reputation for self-management of safety. An important tool for this is the Special Regulations, whose purpose is to establish uniform minimum equipment, accommodation and training standards for racing boats.
The Special Regulations can also act as a guide for cruising boats. (
It is the responsibility of skippers or the persons in charge of all vessels to not only ensure that all safety equipment is onboard, in date, properly maintained and in service, but that everybody on board knows where it is located and sufficient people are trained in the use of special equipment.
This newsletter we will focus on Category 7 races.  These are short races in sheltered waters , in daylight hours only and with effective rescue availability.
Our Friday and Sunday races would fit within this Category, as would daylight races at other Clubs.
Click on the link below to familiarise yourself with the Category 7 form and what is required.  You can commence a self-audit to note what items you have currently and what items are missing.  Further information on equipment auditing will be included in the next newsletter.
Please click here for a CAT 7 Form.

Happy Safe Sailing!

Rear Commodore Regatta

Power Boat Members Help Required

On Friday 7th of February, the Sailors will be conducting the Parmelia Night Race event. This is a very important event in their annual calendar and they need 7 Power Boats to volunteer to man stages on the course.

Our Sailors generously assist Power Boat owners at their annual Cork Evans  Time Trial so it would be fantastic to see as many Power Boat volunteers as possible return the favour.

More information will be sent out to anyone who is prepared to help out on the night. To register your help please call Reception on (08) 9386 6437 or email

Sailing Series at PFSYC

Our sailing calendar includes regular Club racing with fixed and laid mark courses and special events. On a weekly basis our keelboats race in a mixed fleet, Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Please click here to get your copy of our Summer Sailing Fixtures for 2019 - 2020. Copies of our Summer Fixtures can also be found in the Members Lounge.
Please note there will be no Sailing from Sunday 22nd of December 2019 till Friday 10th of January 2020 inclusive.

Crew Register

Are you interested in being part of a Crew? We have spots available for our Friday and Sunday Sailing Races. Should you be keen to participate and be part of the racing atmosphere please register your interest on the Crew Register whiteboard located in our Reception foyer or please email

Members Tips - Anchoring

A couple of terms/considerations when anchoring.

  1. Anchor coming home – When the anchor is dragged towards the vessel. Small boats should bring the vessel up by motor to the near vertical over the anchor.
  2. Freshen the Nip – Especially in foul weather, let a little more line out so that the same section of chain/rope does not receive the abrasion/chafing on the fairlead all the time.
  3. Kedging – Moving a boat by means of an anchor, perhaps when it has been run aground. Do not use anchor winch as you may burn it out. Yachts can use jib winch, if it is not electric.

Vale - Bruce Prance

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our long-time Member, Bruce Prance. Bruce's involvement in Diving, both in WA and Nationally has spanned more than 70 years and his contribution and passion for the sport will be missed and forever remembered.
Bruce's highlights included;

  • Forming the Western Australian Amateur Diving Association in 1957
  • Pioneered dryland training through the early 1960's
  • Australian Diving Coach at the 1964 Tokyo and 1988 Seoul Olympics
  • Inaugural AIS Diving Coach 1984
  • Diving Australia President 1984 - 1986
  • Life Member of Diving WA and Diving Australia
  • Inaugural winner of the Olympians Club of WA Outstanding Contribution Award 2012
  • RAC WA Sports Star Awards - RAC Insurance Service to Sport Award 2016
  • Awarded OAM for service to the sport of diving in 2019

We would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Bruce's family and friends throughout this time. May you rest in peace.
