Note from Commodore Norm Roberts - Development Update #1

Dear Members
This is a very exciting time for the Club.  Next time you are at the Club you may notice that the steel piles for the Wave Attenuator Project have arrived on-site with construction expected to commence imminently. The installation of the Wave Attenuator will protect our vessels from large swells generated from passing boats and fetch, to the benefit of current and future members.
The contractors are confident that the Wave Attenuator will be fully operational by August this year.
Prior to construction we will publish a Temporary Notice to Mariners informing you of the construction’s impact on vessels entering and transiting within the Marina.

During the construction period there will be some interruption to the normal traffic and pedestrian circulation.  With this in mind it is important to remind you that a portion of the Club lease area and foreshore has now been designated as a construction area.  It is prohibited to enter this area without the mandatory safety equipment, such as hard hat, safety vest and steel capped shoes.
For safety reasons, access across the slipway is now restricted.  To traverse the foreshore, you must now walk around the winch house at the head of the slipway.  Follow the signs and walkways indicating the new route.  Below is an illustration of the construction area, with the prohibited area being inside the orange lines.

Following the commissioning of the Wave Attenuator we will commence the redevelopment of the Slips and Foreshore.
For further information please contact the Club.
Kind Regards
Norm Roberts

Wally Pickford Memorial Marathon Race - 8 March

Every year Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club holds the Wally Pickford Memorial Marathon named after Past Commodore Wally Pickford. Wally was born and bred on the Goldfields and had rarely seen a river before a job opportunity brought him to the big smoke. Wally quickly grew fond of the water and before he knew it, he was sailing on the Swan at every opportunity. It wasn't long before Wally was a respected Member of the Club Committee and in 1995 Wally was elected as Commodore. He went on to serve as Commodore for 3 years.

The Marathon covers most of the river and is one of the Club's most important races attracting yachts from most other Clubs. Wally Pickford has sailed Seafarer, Rhumb Runner and in the later years his beloved Shibumi, in every possible race.

Shibumi although not a fast boat could hold her own in strong winds. Such a day occurred in 2002. Wally had been undergoing a long period of treatment for a debilitating cancer. Despite being ill, he was determined to at least start the race. Not only did he start, but he won the race which now bears his name. Sadly, Wally passed away a few weeks later. The battler from the bush more than made his mark as the Squadron's number one flag bearer and his legacy will live on forever.

To commemorate Wally Pickford our annual Memorial Marathon will be held on Sunday, 8th of March 2020, commencing at 11am.

This year our sponsor Hemsley Paterson Valuers & Property Advisors have contributed $650 for our winning sailors, which will be divided over Division 1 & 2, and Division 3  & 4.

Prizes and Presentations will be held on the Friday after the Marathon on 13th of March, 2020, commencing at 7pm in the Members Lounge.

To register your participation in this event please call Reception on (08) 9386 6437 or complete the entry form by clicking here and return it to the PFSYC office or alternatively you can email your entry form to

PLEASE NOTE - Entry forms must be returned to the office by 5pm on Wednesday 4th of March 2020.

Rottnest Island Fuel Jetty
To whom it may concern
It’s been another busy summer on Rottnest, with record numbers of people enjoying our wonderful Island.
With increasing visitor numbers, the Rottnest Island Authority is committed to ensuring all facilities are supporting this growth.
As part of State Government funding, the $3 million redevelopment of Rottnest Island’s Fuel Jetty is underway, with tenders for its demolition and reconstruction being sought.
The new jetty will offer many benefits to the Island, including a new deck, additional power and water facilities, new finger jetties, improved refuelling/berthing for smaller vessels and an extended end platform. More details can be found at
Demolition and construction is due to begin in April 2020.
I wanted to write and inform your club and your members that during the demolition and reconstruction period, there will be disruptions and inconvenience for people who use the Fuel Jetty. In most cases, boat owners will need to make alternative arrangements.
If you have any queries or are seeking more information about the Fuel Jetty project, please contact our Communication and Media Manager Kent Acott on 0419 942 278 or at
