Members Updates from Committee Meetings

During the recent strategy day, some of the Member feedback included requests for more information on what the General Committee was discussing. As a result of the Committee taking your feedback, we will trial a short summary of some of the issues raised during the monthly General Committee meetings in the Club Newsletter. Not all topics and matters will make it into the newsletter to prevent tedium and some matters are "in camera". This will be for a trial period of six months so your feedback would be appreciated.

Some of the July discussions included:

Constitutions, Policies, and By-Laws onto the Web Portal
Many of the Club By-Laws have been updated to align with the new Constitution and these are being uploaded to the Members Portal on a regular basis for your ease of reference.

Lightning Strike Risk during Racing
The risk of lightning strikes to vessels during thunder storms during a race is a foreseeable risk, so guidelines will be developed and added to the Club racing rules.

Attenuator
Feedback from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservations and Attractions (DBCA) on the design and footprint was discussed. Some minor design variations have now seen the DBCA recommend the project for approval by the Minister. The Application and Plans are now on the DBCA website for external review.

Synopsis
There was a critique of the strategy day, a lengthy discussion on attenuator issues and a presentation by the attentuator Project Manager on progress to date and tender documents.

Sunbeam Working Bee

Sunbeam is a piece of WA Maritime and Club history (mentioned regularly in the Club's history ("Flying at Brick Landing") and it was gifted to the Club some years ago by a long-standing Member, Bruce Prance. She was built around 1910, used during WWII to lay landing lights for the Catalinas and to transport passengers to Rottnest. At one point beached and holed in Thomson Bay during a cyclone.

Unfortunately, she has sat idle in the Club's grounds and has deteriorated to a point where she will no longer be seaworthy unless considerable time and effort is spent on her. The Club has approached WA Maritime Museum, private enthusiasts and the Maritime Heritage Association to see if anyone was interested and able to restore her. Although most were interested due to her being the last known plum stem and stern vessel in WA, no group currently has the available resources.

It was decided at the last Committee meeting that a last-ditch effort is to be organised to try and protect her from further deterioration by the way of a working bee to sand, fill, and paint her hull and replace the deck. for starters. After she has been tidied up we will then approach City of Nedlands in the first instance to see if she can be positioned close to the Club within the foreshore area as a memorial to her history.

There is no promise to her final resting place but all we can do is try and respect her and her previous owners.

This project is being funded by some of our Members of the Committee, but we need your help with manpower at a working bee planned for the weekend of 29 - 30 of September. If you think you will be able to assist with an hour or two, please register your interest with our Rear Commodore Marina John Haddon by emailing him on john.haddon@outlook.com or by calling Reception on (08) 9386 6437. Closer to the date we will advise Members what needs to be done and what to bring.

City to Surf Road Closures

Please be aware that Esplanade, Dalkeith will be closed due to the City to Surf Marathon on Sunday 26 August. Access to the Club along this road will be blocked off until approximately 9.30am. For more information on road closures and times please click here http://perthcitytosurf.com/roadclosures/
Please note - Due to this event, Junior Sail Training has been cancelled for this day.

Pen Electrical Issues

Members are politely reminded that the shore power is designed to keep batteries charged, so that the vessels bilge pumps are permanently operational, and the boat is ready to be started. Additional appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, radios, air conditioning etc, all put an extraordinary draw on the supply, which can prompt dropping the circuit breakers which are installed to protect the various circuits. The general power outlets are set up in loops and each loop could be powering up to ten vessels (or more) which are also individually protected. Should there be a faulty appliance or a vessel drawing too much power within that loop, the RCD on the main sub board is often compromised depriving other vessels of power.
Members may find it useful to refer to our Marina Requirements, in particular Section 11.

Storage Units Available

Tired of having to bring down all the supplies every time you head out or have some maintenance to do? Don't forget we have lockable storage units available for hire. Approximately 2m x 2m x 2m, and if that's too much space you can always share with a friend. Great for storing all those items that take up room at home or on the boat (skis, ropes, spare sails, cleaning products, tenders and outboards, fuel containers etc).
Just think, another shed, a place to hide those extra little purchases, make room to move around the shed at home, and reduce that nagging feeling.
We only have a few left so please contact our Membership Manager Sam on members@pfsyc.asn.au for further details or to secure your spot.

Dinghy Racks Available

Don't forget that we have Dinghy Racks for hire if you want to keep your decks clear during your Winter day trips. Keep those kayaks, paddle boards, or tenders safe but still in a convenient location at the Club so they are there when you need them.
Take advantage of our Winter Special - $100/rack from June 1 2018 - November 1 2018
Please contact our Membership Manager Sam on members@pfsyc.asn.au for further details or to secure your spot.

Dinghy Found

It has come to our attention that a dinghy has been placed in our rack which has not been allocated in our system to a Member. If you are the owner of this dinghy please contact our Membership Manager Sam on members@pfsyc.asn.au, Failure to claim this dinghy before Friday 24th of August will be noted and it will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to Junior Sailing.

Members Tips - Extinguishers

Most vessels have a dry chemical powder fire extinguisher on board, and it is important that it is ready for use when needed. The vibration of a vessel when underway settles the powder inside the extinguisher which may render it useless in the event of an emergency. To prevent this from happening, remove the extinguisher from the bracket and invert it a few times while the powder is loose. This should be done on a regular basis and while it is in your hand read the instructions, so you know how to use it if the occasion ever arises.
