Note from Rear Commodore Power, John Wood - Power Boat Members Help Required for Parmelia Night Race

On Friday the 22nd of February, the Sailors will be conducting the Parmelia Night Race event. This is a very important event in their annual calendar and they need 7 Power Boats to volunteer to man stages on the course.

At the moment, we only have 3 checkpoints covered and I really hope we can rally together and help the sailors out, as each year without fail they always support our Cork Evans Time Trial event.

All that would be required is for you to attend a briefing at the Club at around 6.15pm on the night. Anchor up at your allocated spot on the river ready for the race to start at 7pm. Have a torch to enable you to read and record the name and sail number of the passing Yachts and return to the PFSYC once the last boat has sailed past you. Not really a bad way to spend an evening on the beautiful river, possibly sipping on a cold beer and eating snacks!

More information will be sent out to anyone prepared to help on the night.

I hope to get a healthy response from many of our Power Members. Any questions, please feel free to call me on the number below.

Thank you.

John Wood

Every year Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club holds the Wally Pickford Memorial Marathon named after Past Commodore Wally Pickford. Wally was born and bred on the Goldfields and had rarely seen a river before a job opportunity brought him to the big smoke. Wally quickly grew fond of the water and before he knew it, he was sailing on the Swan at every opportunity. It wasn't long before Wally was a respected Member of the Club Committee and in 1995 Wally was elected as Commodore. He went on to serve as Commodore for 3 years.

The Marathon covers most of the river and is one of the Club's most important races attracting yachts from most other Clubs. Wally Pickford has sailed Seafarer, Rhumb Runner and in the later years his beloved Shibumi, in every possible race.

Shibumi although not a fast boat could hold her own in strong winds. Such a day occured in 2002. Wally had been undergoing a long period of treatment for a debilitating cancer. Despite being ill, he was determined to at least start the race. Not only did he start, but he won the race which now bears his name. Sadly, Wally passed away a few weeks later. The battler from the bush more than made his mark as the Squadron's number one flag bearer and his legacy will live on forever.

To commerate Wally Pickford our annual Memorial Marathon will be held on Sunday, March 10 2019 commencing at 11am.

This year our sponsor Hemsley Paterson Valuers & Property Advisors have contributed $600 for our winning sailors, which will be divided over Division 1 & 2, and Division 3  & 4.

Prizes and Presentations will be held on the Friday after the Marathon on February 15, 2019 commencing at 6.30pm in the Members Lounge.

To register your participation in this event please call Reception on (08) 9386 6437 or complete the entry form by clicking here and return it to the PFSYC office or alternateively you can email your entry form to

PLEASE NOTE - Entry forms must be returned to the office by 5pm on Wednesday March 6, 2019.

Diving Contractors

Any members that have diving contractors coming to dive and clean their boats in the marina must inform these contractors that they are required to come into Reception and sign in to our contractors ledger. From there, we are able to notify the bosuns that authority has been given for the contractor to be diving underneath your boat.

Washdown Area

It has come to our attention that Members are not utilising the washdown area found behind the shed at the end of the fuelling jetty correctly. Within this area Members will notice two bays have been marked out for the use of washing down your boats after exiting the river. Please ensure that you are courteous in your use of this area by remaining within a marked bay and that you leave it in a tidy manner for other Members. Please be waterwise and note this area is only for a quick detergent free wash down.

Jetty Gates
Members are politely reminded to lock the jetty gates when entering and leaving the jetties.

Free Timber
There is free timber from old piles which has been cut into 2 metre lengths for Members to take and use for firewood and such. They are located along the seawall between E and F Jetties.
