Squadron News Edition #89
April 5, 2019

The Commodore, Committee and Staff at Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club would like to extend a very warm welcome to the following new Club Members:

Julian Rose
Greg Berry
Stan Cochrane
Mitch Barnes
Paul Fisher

Lachlan Reed
Belinda Horwood
Maczkenzie Horwood
Nick Cooper
Ashlynn Hank

The Club is very pleased to annouce that we have gained final approval from the Minister for Environment for the development of our much anticipated Attenuator.

This is a fantastic step forward for the Club and we envision that this will contribute in building a bright and sustainable future for all our Members.

We are now officially taking enquires and expressions of interest. For more information on the Attenuator development and upcoming availability please contact our Membership Manager on (08) 9386 6437 or email

Note from Rear Commodore Marina - Power Usage

With the approval of the Wave Attenuator, the Committee wanted to assess the current services use on our jetties to better understand the requirements for the proposed new jetty. To assist with this, 10 electrical meters have been installed on a range of vessels along A and AA jetties with some surprising results.

Electrical usage and subsequent costs ranged from $9 to over $300 per month for different vessels. Because of these extremes the Committee then asked the owners what appliances are being left on. Most vessels had the obligatory battery charger and fridge which of course may vary in size and efficiency but some appliances may be considered unnecessary to have running to keep the vessel in a "ready" state when the boat is unattended eg Air conditioners, 2nd or 3rd fridges.

To minimise the cost to the Club and to assist the Committee in maintaining our fee structure we request that all pen owners consider what appliances need to be left running and which ones can be turned off to save ongoing electrical costs.

Please assist us in keeping costs to a minimum.

Thanks and happy boating.

Annual Subscriptions Notice Reminder

Members are politely reminded that your subscriptions and fees were due on April 1, 2019. Please ensure you pay your invoice as soon as possible to avoid incurring any administration charges for late payments, or to avoid your house account in the Members Lounge being placed on hold.

House Support - Takeaway Alcohol

A friendly reminder to Members who used their House Support Contribution Period 2 towards the purchase of takeaway alcohol order, that your orders are ready for collection. Orders can be picked up from the office Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm or from the Members Lounge from 12pm on Saturday and Sunday.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our Retired Commodore (1965 - 1967), Life Member and Club Patron, Don Davies. We would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Don's wife Sheila, as well as the rest of Don's family and friends throughout this challenging time.
May you rest in Peace.

Club Fishing Boat

"Chart Plotter and Sounder"

With the commissioning of the Club Fishing Boat not far away, we are in need of a Chart Plotter and Sounder.
If by any chance you have a Chart Plotter and/or Sounder which is surplus to your requirements, the Club would be extremely grateful if you would consider donating it to the Club for the Club Fishing Boat, and to a worthwhile cause.
The Club Fishing Boat will be available to Members to venture out on regular fishing trips with other Members. Moreover, the Club Fishing Boat will also be used to provide free fishing trips to disadvantaged families in the local Community. "Father & Son" day fishing trips will provide an opportunity for disadvantaged families to experience a day on the water learning how to fish and bonding; an opportunity that they might not have had before, or have again.
In partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation, all donations to the Club's Fishing Program are 100% tax deductible.

Easter Monday BBQ Sundowner

Members Tips - Mouse all Shackles

All shackles that have a hole through the shackle pin should be moused. That is; put a wire through the hole in the shackle pin and thread it around an area of the shackle pin and twist on itself several times. Unmoused shackle pins on mooring lines and anchors will slowly undo, with possibly devastating consequences.
